How it all began
The traction battery (or electric vehicle battery) is a very heavy component of electric vehicles. It accounts for up to 30% of the vehicle’s weight. It is also one of the most expensive components. Elaborate manufacturing processes and complex integration make the battery a costly affair. And last but not least, safety and durability also play a crucial role in the development of an automobile.
We therefore asked ourselves the question: Is it possible to make the battery of an electric vehicle lighter while keeping all other properties identical or even improving them? Our team took up the challenge and fundamentally changed the way a battery is constructed from individual cells and complex cable harnesses. The idea of the LIGHT Battery was born.
The initial concept was promising. It was light, flexible and scalable – ideal prerequisites for integration in a vehicle. With the BMW i3, we selected a pioneer of production-ready electromobility as a test platform. With unchanged installation space, we were able to realize a groundbreaking range of 700 km.
However, this success is no reason for us to stop. On the contrary, we are now already testing the second iteration of our novel battery, always with the aim of pushing the boundaries of what is technically possible.
