European Tender for the Development of a High Voltage Lithium Battery for the Aviation Industry

LION is pleased to announce the win of the European tender for the development of a high voltage battery for the aviation industry with TWT, a specialist in science and innovation. In this tender, with a budget of EUR 443,100, LION Smart is taking on the specific development and testing tasks in the field of battery systems, commissioned by the European Union. TWT GmbH Science & Innovation is responsible for project management and simulation.

Hybrid and electric propulsion systems for aeronautics represent an enormous potential for innovation especially with regard to CO2 savings. In order to achieve a reliable, efficient, and safe operation of such battery systems they must be optimized in terms of energy storage capacity, electrical power, total mass, volume, and thermal requirements regarding materials and construction.

The main goal is to design, construct, and assemble a prototype of an entire battery pack with superior energy density. A clear definition of the interfaces will insure easy integration of the demonstrator into current aircraft architectures. The prototype will be developed to reach TRL4 (Technology Readiness Level 4) and will be validated under laboratory conditions.
