Lithium-Ion Cell Technology
A whole new battery concept that uses liquid immersion cooling for ultra fast charging and high performance lithium-ion cell technology.
The LION LIGHT Battery is a novel concept for integrating battery cells that enables extremely high energy and packing densities. Our approach revolutionizes the way round cells are integrated into a battery.
In our LIGHT Battery, the measuring boards for voltage and temperature monitoring are an integral part of the cell wiring. This reduces the number of components and we create more space for what makes a battery – the energy.
The battery cells and electronics are completely immersed in a 3M Novec® high-tech fluid. This enables optimum heat exchange, ultra-fast charging, and ensures effective and even temperature control of the battery. And if worst comes to worst, the fluid also serves as a fire retardant – for maximum safety.
With the advanced liquid cooling design and intelligent software control, we achieve maximum durability for the LIGHT Battery and maintain high energy performance throughout the entire lifespan of the battery.
Each cell of the LIGHT Battery is monitored by a single-cell BMS and is individually fused. In addition, the cooling medium also acts as an extinguishing agent if required and can effectively dissipate large amounts of heat by means of a phase change. This means that maximum safety standards of the battery can be ensured at all times.
By eliminating the need for cable assembly, the LIGHT Battery sets new standards in automation capability. In addition, a wide range of cell and module configurations can be realized with our modular approach. The battery pack can be adapted to all package requirements – for ideal realization of your mobility application.
The traction battery (or electric vehicle battery) is a very heavy component of electric vehicles. It accounts for up to 30% of the vehicle’s weight. It is also one of the most expensive components. Elaborate manufacturing processes and complex integration make the battery a costly affair. And last but not least, safety and durability also play a crucial role in the development of an automobile.
We therefore asked ourselves the question: Is it possible to make the battery of an electric vehicle lighter while keeping all other properties identical or even improving them? Our team took up the challenge and fundamentally changed the way a battery is constructed from individual cells and complex cable harnesses. The idea of the LIGHT Battery was born.
The initial concept was promising. It was light, flexible and scalable – ideal prerequisites for integration in a vehicle. With the BMW i3, we selected a pioneer of production-ready electromobility as a test platform. With unchanged installation space, we were able to realize a groundbreaking range of 700 km.
However, this success is no reason for us to stop. On the contrary, we are now already testing the second iteration of our novel battery, always with the aim of pushing the boundaries of what is technically possible.
The first concept of our LIGHT Battery was awarded the eMove360° Award 2018.
