LION Smart Production opening ceremony Hildburghausen

Hildburghausen, 23 June 2023 – Now it’s official: under the motto “The future of battery technology starts here”, LION Smart Production GmbH, a wholly owned subsidiary of LION E-Mobility AG for the production of electrical energy storage systems and lithium-ion battery system technology, inaugurated the company’s first production facility in Hildburghausen (southern Thuringia) today in front of 60 invited guests.

LION Smart Production GmbH is investing millions of Euros in the new location in southern Thuringia. But the establishment of the production site was also made possible by the support of institutions in the state. These include the Thüringer Aufbaubank and the Landesentwicklungsgesellschaft Thüringen (LEG). The latter was involved with
Dr. Arnulf Wulff, Head of the Acquisition Department, Thüringen Invest and Cluster Management and authorised signatory, was present at the opening. For him, the settlement of LION Smart Production is a great success. “Great things are happening in Thuringia in the battery industry. We are in the process of motivating companies from the entire battery ecosystem to locate in Thuringia. Therefore, we are very pleased that we can close a gap in the entire value chain in battery technology with LION Smart Production and its high-voltage battery. That is why we were very quick to support the company’s settlement in Thuringia,” said Dr Arnulf Wulff in his speech.

Patrick Hammerschmidt, the newly elected mayor of Hildburgshausen, also took the opportunity to say a few words of welcome. In his short speech he emphasises: “The establishment of LION Smart Production is a good day for Hildburgshausen. I am very pleased that a very innovative company has chosen our town for its production facility.” “Arrive, develop – I am always available to address your concerns,” Mayor Patrick Hammerschmidt continued.

Alessio Basteri, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of LION E-Mobility AG, parent company of LION Smart Production GmbH, thanked the state of Thüringen in his speech: “We are grateful for the great support of the state and the access to financial support opportunities. We are very happy today and will continue to invest here in Hildburghausen in the future.

For LION Smart Production Managing Director, Winfried Buss, the choice of Hildburghausen was made for good reason. “We chose the location here in Thuringia based on economic factors, among others. The proximity to our other company locations in the Munich area played just as much a role as the settlement support and funding from the Free State of Thuringia. We are grateful for the financial and active support of LEG Thüringen and the Thüringer Aufbaubank. I am particularly grateful to our staff, who have worked with incredible dedication over the past months. Without the team, none of this would have been possible,” says Winfried Buss.

A battery every five minutes

The LION production plant is trimmed for high performance. Around 4.8 million battery cells can be assembled in the factory every year. This corresponds to a capacity of 200 battery packs per day or 50,000 packs per year, which can be assembled in three-shift operation. Under full load, a completed and tested battery would be able to leave the production halls every five minutes. The LION SE09 battery is a high-voltage battery and is intended for both mobile and stationary applications. The applications in mobility range from passenger and goods transport on the road to maritime transport.

The assembly of the battery packs from LION is almost completely automated. The guests present were able to see this for themselves during the tour of the production halls. Only a few manual operations are necessary at the six individual stations, the rest is done by modern high-performance robots. The storage capacities for the battery cells used are also high. In order to be able to serve customer orders on a large scale, the production site has space to store up to 600 storage units.

LION creates new jobs

As the order situation is expected to continue to rise, the company’s need for personnel in Hildburghausen will also continue to increase. At present, further recruitment is underway and open positions have been advertised. Due to the high degree of automation in production and the associated necessary expertise, mainly qualified jobs will be created. The attractiveness of LION’s product portfolio helps to fill vacancies promptly.
